Ricky and three friends fished a venue called Tzaneen in South Africa from 5th to 15th November 2009. They had to contend with Hippos and crocodiles. In his own words: "The time in the bush was awesome. Crocs stealing the barbel, hippo nearby for 5 days. Quite nights, magic sunsets and sun rises. Surrounded by mountains and forest. The clearest forest water."
"The length of the water is 14km. The water surface is 2965 acres. What you see on the photos is about 2km of the water. We fished over a length of about 800m - 4 anglers. A decent fish finder and inflatable help a lot. Over the years you build up a knowledge of what type of under-water structures the carp prefer and where they congregate.
We're a very small group of specimen carp anglers who prefer and focus on Wild Water Carping - often huge bodies of water. Probably more because of the bush side of things, getting away from people and enjoying the very best nature has to offer.
Next time I'll see how close I can get to take photos of the hippo's - lol. We were privileged to see the local Fish Eagle catch fish in the water on three occasions during the 10 days. Amazing. On one occasion the fish was too heavy. It grabbed hold of the fish and then had this awkward way of swimming (if you can call it swimming - looked more like drowning) to the side with its wings. Never seen or read about that. I wonder if it has ever been observed before."
