Tips and tricks - Margin Fishing

New postby cowley » Wed Jun 24, 2009 10:24 am

I know alot of people like to fish the margins. We all know, especially on waters where carp and match anglers mix, that bait will be thrown into the edge of the swim at the end of the session. Normally out straight. Yet I've witnessed, and done it myself, carp anglers fishing the margins will cast up the bank to obvious near bank reeds or overhanging trees, but predominantly between swims.
I've caught many a 'bonus' carp fishing the margin directly in front of the swim. Make sure none of the rod is overhanging the water, and fish a fairly loose line to negate line pressure. Set your camp to the rear of the swim, keep quiet and be patient. If fishing 2 rods, keep them apart to minimise line pressure on the short rod.
This method makes it easy for baiting, presentation is great, you don't need a back lead, and you'll be surprised how many others won't do this.

One other little edge that has caught me some bonus fish.
When fishing a venue which sees a lot of spodding make a note of the "spillage" areas. On St Johns most anglers used to spod at 70 yards'ish and the hemp etc would also be spilling out at about 20 yards but nobody was fishing it. When I did some leading around I found that the fish had cleaned a strip and I caught several carp by flicking out the rods after dark when nobody was watching.

Be lucky mate. I'm well out of touch with the place now but when the place was crowded it was often worthwhile squeezing in between anglers on the long bank. With even a small amount of leading you will soon find whether the chanel in the weed is still there mate. Fish at range with a zig during the days and then just after it's dark when no-one can see what you're doing drop the baits into the chanel at about 20 yards and fish them slack lines. Even the moggies used to patrol it.

Top tip Keith, very little to add other than to point out that half a boilie at close range can also bring good results.

Hi Guys,

I have published this. It is our first tip from the main web site.

Web site here:

http://www.thinkingcarp.com/

I have called the tip "Margin Fishing", and I have accredited Cowley and Moorsey with its composition as I have joined the two excellent posts on this thread together.

I hope that is OK with you guys - let me know if not, and I can change it.

Thanks guys.

can i add to this saying that using maize and hemp in the margins seems to work really well! kev told me to use this- and on a recent session i regularly topped up margin spots with hemp and maize and managed a few runs off the spot aswell as having alot of feeding activity!

Broken boilies, and fish 2 halfs or an odd shape boilie on hair.. margin fish are used to anglers pulling boilies off the hair and chucking in margins..they are rarely whole.. ;)
